anyway, thats not the point...
Language, Education and Development [LED for short] is one of the two subjects i took this term. i still cant see the relevence but there is alot of interesting things and facts.. 3hours [with Liz of course] class make you want to go home and hide under the duvet [lagi2 skarang ni sejuk giler..syok seh tido~~~] till dinner time. mainly its about many countries language policy and what it did to the country and its citizens. and i have an opinion about our Malaysian language policy in terms of Education... [can i still change my d***** topic??]
anyway, it was rediscovered... an issue back in year 2000, where this fella [dont even know who he is...not even in the education field i guess..] try to make a revamp by saying we should have back English [as the medium of instructions] schools like the old days before all the education bills ie penyata razak, penyata rahman talib etc etc.. published [which make the Malay Language as the medium as instruction in all national schools].
he said learning english does not make u less of a malay or less patriotic or less nationalist.. well i must say it does not.. [...walaupun BM aku masa SPM dulu dpt 3B jek...T_T...English leh plak dpt A..huhu]. after all this year..i must say i am still very much of a Malay... still makan pakai tangan k? [does a 2 year craving for Ikan Patin masak tempoyak make u believe me???]
i went to an English kindergarten for a year, then to a very-heavy-English-influenced national primary school [Methodist Girl School] before i went to you-are-an-alien-with-antenna-if-u-speak-English school... T_T nama jek SMART...hampeh! but the main reason why i improve my english was bcos during Year 6, i develop an interest in reading english novels.. [largely thanks to my friends].. thats how i develop my interest in the language. but you see, learning a language includes learning its culture because language is part of culture.. remember Siti's song Kurik Kundi? ;) when u learn english, you cant see much of its difference..but take an example of learning Nihon.. [aineee help plisss].... but im sure those people who took Jap are also interested in knowing its culture. dont get me started about how culture can bring a whole different meaning to the language... look what happen to Standard British English being turned into Malaysian English?? [read in Wikipedia...very very interesting]..please dont say thats not because of cultural influences...
contradic to my status now.. an English teacher to be...i am 100% against the idea of having an all English schools again..
1. it will further divide and continue to separate and congragate our society using the language status thingy...isnt it sad? for all the things we did to make people live together peacefully...why want to undo all that??? do u want chaos?
2. ...in the newspaper article, he said the decision made in Razak report to make Malay Language as the sole medium of instruction is a 'mistake of history'. now...isnt that like pot calling the kettle black?? it is not a mistake..the goverment did what they think best for the citizens at that time. it may not be the best now.. but who can predict the future? wat la weh~~~
half of the things he said is true.. English, being the Language of Wider Communication, is important. being able to speak, write, read well in English is crucial and becoming even more vital in the business world and information technology era. We must do something to increase the standard of English in Malaysia if we want to keep up with the rest of the world...
... and yes...at the moment..i can see many many flaws in our Education System.. and in regards to the standard of English in schools..
...why must we make the student suffer even more with Maths and Science in English? it was hard enough to understand it in Malay.. wat more in English..our second language..and to some a foreign language. Quoting the UK Minister of Education, 2003..he believes that lesson in the first language will help student succeed. I think its obvious...for eg how many Malaysian students are there in UK alone? All of us learn Maths n Science in Malay and many of us are engineering students... cant u see that simple connection???
and why...why... must we make the teachers [who are being undervalued... pressured... buried under tonnes of workload.. ] suffer even more and more??? haih~~ dah la kerja banyak..gaji sikit.. bagi lagi kerja extra...pastu bising2 kata cikgu tak buat keje?? malas mengajar? sapa nak buat kalau cam tuh?? tau tak apa itu motivation? extrinsic? intrinsic?? demmit! T_T ...even for me, trying to explain simple maths problem to a 9 year old in English is a problem [...i get A for maths in SPM as well ok?] with sufficient language and maths knowledge i couldnt possibly explain how to convert KG to g to an English child!!!! T_T [aku seorang yg gagal...]. its not as easy as it sound. FYI: Teachers DO have a life..they have families, kids and other resposibilities.. takde pasal la nak mengadap buku sepanjang masa weh~~
ok so u can see...im not 100% with that policy either.. and the implementation.... aduh la.. satu kegagalan tahap abadi...
no textbook... no coursebook... teachers not trainned.. help? aiyoo...far from easily available.. kalau masa tu la baru nak cetak buku...baru nak panggil cikgu pegi kursus 5hari [ingat 5 hari cukup ke?? huhu...] baru nak tubuh jawatankuasa untuk support cikgu2...hmm...tak kesian kat budak2 yg baru masuk skolah tuh??? T_T its not wrong.. maybe im not 100% with it.. it can be done...it can bring turmendous positive effect...but do it the correct way.. ni macam nak menghancurkan bangsa sendiri jek...amenda la..
above all...there is one more thing i couldnt understand.. why the fuss of trying to revive English schools and make Maths n Science being taught in English in order to increase the fluency of the English Language in our society...but there is NO major change done in the English Language Syllabus???? dah kenapa?? shouldnt that be the first one we looked at? Is our English Language Syllabus perfect? [haha]
...im amazed...
ok la.. enuf about the English Language status in Malaysia.. lenkali jek la aku sambung bab exam plak...T_T tu lagi satu la.. tolong la tukar segera... woi!! dengar tak nih??? tukar la exam system tuh... TUKAR...boleh tak?? tak berkesan langsung dah...

i got A for Malay and english. Math also. Arabic got B. silap la dulu ms spm x amik japanese. kalo x sure dpt A. ngehngeh.
basically, learning foreign language doesn't make you become less malay and so forth.
even the britons in here are learning languages like french, latin etc but still, they are loyal to england. same goes with me, even i learned arabic etc, i still practise malay customs and eat malay food.
